Five suspects awaiting trial on robbery with violence and gang rape allegations broke out of the cells at Limuru Police Station in Kiambu County on the night of November 4, 2026, after attacking the officers who opened their holding area, The Star, Kenya reports.
The escape happened at about 11pm, when officers unlocked the male cells to move 10 detainees into an inner room. Two officers were assaulted as they opened the metal grill door, according to the account given by police.
The suspects overpowered the pair and ran from the station, The Star, Kenya reports. The officers raised an alarm, and a crime standby officer who answered the call was also attacked by the fleeing group.
Of the seven men in custody on the robbery and gang rape allegations, five got away. The remaining two stayed behind, police said.
Why it matters
The breakout puts attention on security at a station holding suspects accused of serious violent offences, and on how detainees are moved inside police premises at night.
It also leaves five men accused of robbery with violence and gang rape at large, days before they were due to answer the charges in court. The Star, Kenya reports that the group had been held since mid-October and was scheduled to take plea on November 5, 2026 — the day after the escape.
Three officers were injured in the assault, police said. The circumstances of the escape are under investigation.
How the night unfolded
The five were arrested on October 14, 2026, and taken before the Limuru Chief Magistrates' Court the next day on a miscellaneous application for more time to complete investigations, according to The Star, Kenya. They were remanded in custody until November 5, when the plea was expected to be entered.
On the night of November 4, officers opened the male cells to transfer 10 suspects into an inner room. The two officers at the grill door were attacked as it was opened, and the group forced its way out.
After the alarm was raised, a crime standby officer responded and was set upon by the escaping suspects, police said. Five of the seven men facing the robbery and gang rape allegations did not return to the cells; two did.
A security operation led by the Limuru Sub-County Police Commander and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer has been mounted to find the five and bring them back into custody, The Star, Kenya reports.
A second killing under investigation
In a separate case, police in Migori County are investigating the death of a mechanic who was reportedly taken from his workplace by armed men in Kehancha Township and later found dead beside a road in Kebobino Village.
The man was identified as Joseph Wang'eng'i, a mechanic working in Kehancha Township in Kuria West Sub-County, according to The Star, Kenya.
Officers who went to the scene in Kebobino Village, Gwikonge Sub-Location, found the body by the roadside. The victim's throat had been cut, and he had deep wounds to the head, left wrist and palm, along with an injury to his left foot.
A badly damaged mobile phone was found near the body, though police had not established who owned it.
Preliminary findings suggest Wang'eng'i had been collected from his place of work earlier that evening by unidentified men carrying machetes, The Star, Kenya reports. The attackers were said to be travelling in a white Toyota Noah whose plate was only partly captured, beginning with the letters KCL; the remaining characters had not been determined.
The body was taken to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where it is being kept pending a postmortem examination. Detectives are working to establish what happened and to identify those responsible.
The two cases are being handled separately, and police have not suggested any link between them.
What to watch: whether the Limuru operation produces arrests, and whether the injured officers' accounts shape the internal inquiry into how the transfer was handled.
